Speakers

Alan Lai, Allied Environmental Consultants
Jason Ouyang, JJP Architects and Planners
Jiexin Li, Architecture 2030

Description

Climate change presents a formidable challenge and, as architects, we have a unique opportunity to address this pressing issue. Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions associated with construction of our built environment is essential - but a critical question remains: how can this be achieved? This session will explore various aspects of what can be done, citing knowledge transfer, development of skills, tools and working frameworks, and the ethos of firms that are advancing more effective climate action every day.

Alan Lai, from Allied Environmental Consultants, Hong Kong, will discuss the importance of airflow and natural ventilation in sustainable environments. This will include case studies on the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in urban contexts, with a focus on microclimate studies and air ventilation assessments - especially in relation to wind-influenced design.

From Taipei, Jason Ouyang of JJP Architects and Planners, will explain how his firm is currently designing projects based on environmental considerations and how they delineate sustainability standards in Taiwan. This will address the identification of suitable solutions, and illustrate a framework that allows an architectural firm to go beyond mere regulatory compliance through cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Finally, Jiexin Li from Architecture 2030, Shanghai, will speak on the systemic transformation within our industry, particularly in Greater China and Asia, guiding us towards the shared objective of achieving net zero carbon emissions in the building sector.

Description

China as the most populous country in the world set goals for an unprecedented urbanization rate in the late 1980s. These goals brought tremendous opportunities for both local and foreign architects and planners. After 30 years of non-stop building the tallest, the biggest new cities, and the most complex development. Today, we have arrived at a crossroads of self-reflection for her future city and architecture design identity as well as the resulting quality of her environment. Her ambitions now further set her sights as a world leader in innovation and the fight against climate change. It is with this backdrop that AIA Shanghai | Beijing presents the Master Lecture Series with Edward Mazria, FAIA, who received the AIA Gold Medal 2021, founder of Architecture 2030, and Qingyun Ma, AIA, Partner of MADA s.p.a.m and the former Dean of the School of Architecture, University of Southern California.

Edward Mazria will update us on the state of the 2030 commitment from a global perspective, keeping the Paris Agreement 1.5oC alive, and the transformation underway in the built environment to address the most pressing issues of our time – urbanization, energy, and climate change. Ma will take us through his journey in fighting climate change with cultural sensitivity and achievable local craft with the most sustainable material wood.

Join us on these thought-provoking master lectures at the WeWork (Weihai Road) in Shanghai, or online, followed by a Q&A after each presentation and a networking session. Light refreshments will be served for those attending the live event.

AIA Shanghai - Women in Architecture: In Pursuit of Happiness

AIA Shanghai - Women in Architecture: In Pursuit of Happiness

When: Friday 8 July 2022 @ 07:00 (Eastern US Time)/ 19:00 (Shanghai time)
Where: Wework, 696 Weihai Road Jing'an District Shanghai/ ONLINE
CES Credits - 1.5 LU for AIA Members

Description

The American Institute of Architects Shanghai Chapter will be launching our first ‘Woman in Architecture’ event on Friday, July 8th 2022 at WeWork (696 Weihai Lu). The meaning of happiness has become very skewed amidst the recent Shanghai lockdown. We would argue that happiness is not lost, and the key to finding it is not through social distancing but rather through distance socializing and finding simple sources of joy. The theme of this event is ‘In Pursuit of Happiness’. We have invited some of China’s female leaders to share with us their personal experiences on how they can find happiness amidst the pandemic and what we can do to come stronger after this crisis.

In the post-pandemic era, we face various severe challenges: deteriorating market conditions, reduced productivity, lower economic returns, and increased unemployment.

The lockdown in Shanghai lasts 2-3 months this year, with unpredictable incidents and rumours. This is a time when almost everyone is suffering greater anxiety than ever before, but none of us has stopped our pursuit of happiness. This special historical moment made us think: “What does happiness mean to us?”. As it is known to all, happiness is a necessity that all of us expect to acquire and yearn for. It means a lot to everyone.

Studies found that happiness doesn’t follow success and it’s the other way round. A happy employee can maximize an enterprise’s creativity, productivity, profitability, and social influence. A female filled with happiness can maximize the vitality, motive power and sense of worth of our life, family and work.
