AIA Shanghai - Women in Architecture: In Pursuit of Happiness

AIA Shanghai - Women in Architecture: In Pursuit of Happiness

When: Friday 8 July 2022 @ 07:00 (Eastern US Time)/ 19:00 (Shanghai time)
Where: Wework, 696 Weihai Road Jing'an District Shanghai/ ONLINE
CES Credits - 1.5 LU for AIA Members

Description

The American Institute of Architects Shanghai Chapter will be launching our first ‘Woman in Architecture’ event on Friday, July 8th 2022 at WeWork (696 Weihai Lu). The meaning of happiness has become very skewed amidst the recent Shanghai lockdown. We would argue that happiness is not lost, and the key to finding it is not through social distancing but rather through distance socializing and finding simple sources of joy. The theme of this event is ‘In Pursuit of Happiness’. We have invited some of China’s female leaders to share with us their personal experiences on how they can find happiness amidst the pandemic and what we can do to come stronger after this crisis.

In the post-pandemic era, we face various severe challenges: deteriorating market conditions, reduced productivity, lower economic returns, and increased unemployment.

The lockdown in Shanghai lasts 2-3 months this year, with unpredictable incidents and rumours. This is a time when almost everyone is suffering greater anxiety than ever before, but none of us has stopped our pursuit of happiness. This special historical moment made us think: “What does happiness mean to us?”. As it is known to all, happiness is a necessity that all of us expect to acquire and yearn for. It means a lot to everyone.

Studies found that happiness doesn’t follow success and it’s the other way round. A happy employee can maximize an enterprise’s creativity, productivity, profitability, and social influence. A female filled with happiness can maximize the vitality, motive power and sense of worth of our life, family and work.

Moriko Kira, Director of Moriko Kira Architect and Guest Professor of Meiji University

Description

Since 1992, I am travelling back and forth between Amsterdam and Tokyo.

It is my pleasure to be active be in the countries with completely different culture.

The Netherlands has a strong history of city planning and architecture since sixteenth century and as architect, either working on historic or new building, you are always aware of the relationship between city and architecture and its history. How people live together changes and architecture always reacts to these changes. The aging society, the polarization and diversification of society and the weakening ties of families and communities…. There are so many questions where we architects could try to give answers by creating new living environments.

This lecture is the second one of two lectures that AIA Japan and I-AUD, Meiji University jointly host for Spring Semester 2022.

https://iaud.jp/news/moriko-kira/

Speaker Bio

Moriko Kira is the director of Moriko Kira Architect in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She is also Guest Professor in the Department of Architecture at Meiji University and Guest Professor in the Department of Environmental Design at Kobe Design University.

Moriko Kira specializes in creating living environments in which people from different cultures and generations are able to actively participate in the design process, whether designing a house or transforming a neighborhood. Moriko believes in a method of architectural and environmental design that involves the full range of stakeholders – residents, municipalities, local businesses and investors – in the design, production and management process. This approach enables her to create or transform existing neighborhoods into dynamic living environments, where everyone can belong and participate. She believes, now more than ever, that architects have an important responsibility to create resilient neighborhoods that address the social challenges arising from aging populations, social isolation among all age groups, and shortages of affordable housing. She has realized several cooperative projects, including Linie Groningen and the recently completed co-ownership housing development Ebbinghof in Groningen, both in the Netherlands.

Moriko believes that in order to realize such projects properly, architects need to understand the culture and history of a neighborhood and buildings. Understanding how history shaped the site, the neighborhood and the buildings is key to designing for the future. Moriko has also worked on the renovation, restoration and transformation of a large number of historic buildings in Europe, including the Siebold Museum in Leiden, the Netherlands, a fifteenth-century villa in Vicenza, Italy, and Silo in Münster, Germany. It is essential at this time of environmental and social crisis to view today’s built environment as part of the continuum of human history, stretching from the distant past into the future. Alongside creating integrated places and spaces, Moriko believes our primary task as architects is to incorporate environmental concerns into our designs through our choice of materials, resources and energy use.

Moriko Kira graduated from the Department of Architecture at Graduate School of Waseda University, Japan, and also studied at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. She has taught at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam and Waseda University and was a finalist in the Prix de Rome, the national art and architecture prize in the Netherlands. Moriko’s designs in the Dutch cities of Groningen, Apeldoorn and Amsterdam also won the cities’ Architecture Prizes. She is a First Class Architect in Japan and a registered architect in the Netherlands, which is a formally recognized qualification in the European Union.

AIA Hong Kong - Mass Timber – For The Future Of Our Built Environment

AIA Hong Kong - Mass Timber – For The Future Of Our Built Environment

When: Thursday 26 May 2022 @ 07:30 (Eastern US Time)/ 19:30 (Hong Kong time)
CES Credits - 1.5 LU/ HSW for AIA Members

Description

Urban environments are responsible for 75% of annual global Green House Gas emissions; the construction and operation of buildings alone accounts for 39%. Eliminating these emissions is the key to addressing climate change and meeting the Paris Climate Agreement targets.

To address the issue of embodied carbon – and in conjunction with using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal – wood presents a unique opportunity since it is the only truly renewable building material. Through modern engineering and digital fabrication the use of wood as a structural element is now possible, with the advent of Mass Timber.

This webinar will be conducted by Tom Chung, FAIA. Tom has extensive experience in the research, development and practical application of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in building construction. In this presentation, he will share with us his recently completed CLT projects and discuss the future potential of structural hardwood species in contemporary architecture.

This event is sponsored by American Hardwood Export Council.

CES Credits - 1.5 LU/ HSW for AIA Members

Description

Did you know that building and interior construction is a major source of global carbon emissions? Or that every time an office relocates or renovates, a huge amount of unwanted waste, equipment and furniture ends up in our landfills, when it could easily be repurposed or recycled?

Architectural material and furniture company JEB established Sustainable Office Solutions (SOS) to help businesses be a part of the solution and not the problem. SOS works with corporations and property management companies to facilitate a circular economy of office assets. The streamlined process is tailored to divert furniture waste from landfills. Data such as weight and carbon reduction from the project is then recorded in the impact report to support clients’ sustainability strategies and goals helping to strike a balance between businesses, social responsibility and the environment.

Thirty projects have already been successfully completed in the company’s first 10 months of operation, during which time more than 250 tons of office assets have been diverted from landfills in Hong Kong and Singapore, and almost 2,000 items of FF&E have been redistributed to local communities, schools and NGOs.

This webinar will introduce the program, explain how it works, compare traditional methods of furniture and construction material disposal versus the “circular” model, and explain how architects and designers can help promote more sustainable asset management to their clients to lessen the impact on our environment.

Description

AIA Hong Kong is excited to announce its 25th Anniversary Symposium: Connectivity and Placemaking in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). Jointly organized with AECOM, the symposium will include webinars and events to provoke thought and provide insight into the urban planning and development of the GBA.

Over the past several years, the significance of the GBA to the international and local design industries has grown steadily. Inter-city collaboration and cross-border cooperation have been essential to the success of joint developments and infrastructure upgrades – with high-levels of coordination between multiple cities in the GBA. From a three-hour travel outer ring to an inner one-hour living zone, these initiatives have improved livability and helped to facilitate inter-city mobility of people, goods and information.

As the most open and international city in the GBA, Hong Kong is well-known as a financial, transportation, trade and aviation hub. With the completion of projects such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the High Speed Rail, how can we continue to play a key role in the design and planning of this dynamic region, as well as in China’s development blueprint?

To assist China in their goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, what are the key issues that designers and planners need to take into consideration to create an adaptable, scalable and hybrid environment of people, resources and nature?

Beginning with our first webinar on April 7, we will invite notable scholars, planners, architects, engineers and landscape architects to engage in conversations on how Hong Kong can connect with other GBA cities through infrastructure planning. Topics will include:

• Overview of current GBA policy and planning
• Regional connectivity and airport development
• Infrastructure challenges and urban design.

AIA Hong Kong - Every Building Counts: Keeping 1.5°C Alive with Edward Mazria

When: Thursday 31 March 2022 @ 00:00 (Eastern US Time)/ 12:00 (Hong Kong time)
CES Credits - 1.5 LU/ HSW for AIA Members

Speaker

Edward Mazria, FAIA, founder of Architecture 2030

Description

Buildings are the largest source of carbon emissions globally, accounting for approximately 40% of total emissions. Combined with the embodied carbon of building interiors, systems and associated infrastructure, the percentage is substantially higher. Carbon reduction is therefore a topic that is front and center for architects to tackle. AIA is leading the discussion on carbon reduction and has launched the AIA 2030 Commitment - an actionable climate strategy that gives us a set of standards - and goals - for reaching net zero emissions in the built environment, now within less than eight years.

Please join this webinar with Edward Mazria, FAIA, 2021 AIA Gold Medalist and Founder of Architecture 2030 for a riveting presentation on keeping the Paris Agreement alive and the transformation underway in our built environment.

When: Monday 28 March 2022 @ 06:30 (Eastern US Time)/ 18:30 (Singapore time)
CES Credits - Estimated 1.0 LU for AIA Members

Description

Kengo Kuma was born in 1954. Before establishing Kengo Kuma & Associates in 1990, he received his Master's Degree in Architecture from the University of Tokyo, where he is currently a University Professor and a Professor Emeritus. Having been inspired by Kenzo Tange's Yoyogi National Gymnasium, built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Kengo Kuma decided to pursue architecture at a young age, and later entered the Architecture program at the University of Tokyo, where he studied under Hiroshi Hara and Yoshichika Uchida. During his Graduate studies, he made a research trip across the Sahara, exploring various villages and settlements, observing a unique power and beauty. After his time as a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in New York, he stablished his office in Tokyo. Since then, Kengo Kuma & Associates has designed architectural works in over thirty countries and received prestigious awards, including the Architectural Institute of Japan Award, the Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award (Finland), and the International Stone Architecture Award (Italy), among others. Kengo Kuma & Associates aims to design architecture which naturally merges with its cultural and environmental surroundings, proposing gentle, human scaled buildings. The office is constantly in search of new materials to replace concrete and steel, and seeks a new approach for architecture in a post-industrial society.
