Event Description

More than ever, higher education campuses need to effectively respond to community concerns affecting security, health, environment, privacy, and an increasingly diverse  student-body and faculty. In this session, the speaker will share principles and lessons learned in higher education architecture centered around a case study of a recently completed multidisciplinary college of architecture and design. The core of the talk will cover how the college was designed and executed around humanistic principles that foster collaboration and respond to diverse campus needs upon a backdrop of a constantly changing learning environment.

Christopher Chan, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Principal, Moore Ruble Yudell

Christopher Chan has nearly 30 years of experience leading the design and development of landmark mixed-use, retail, office, hotel and higher education projects throughout Asia and the United States. He is a recognized leader in green building design, utilizing a collaborative process centered on rigorous design investigation and strong technical integration to produce high performance buildings. He specializes in high profile and landmark urban design projects in the U.S. and throughout Asia.

Prior to joining Moore Ruble Yudell, he served as Design Director and Commercial Office/ Retail Practice leader for several leading international architectural design firms. His projects in China include the landmark 380,000 sqm/ 632m Shanghai Tower and the 350m Nanjing World Trade Center tower, a 200-acre technology focused hub master plan in the City of Songjiang, and the NIKE Headquarters campus and retail center in Shanghai. Currently, Mr. Chan is leading the design of the new, 813,000 sqm Shanghai Advanced Research Institute campus for MRY.

Chris is an internationally recognized speaker, recognized speaker, having spoken at HOPSCA, Green Build China and the US/ China Clean Energy Forum. With architecture degrees from the University of Southern California, and Columbia University, he has been invited as a guest lecturer at Duke University, the University of Southern California, Hong Kong University, and the Tongji University in Shanghai. He is also active in the professional design community, serving as a founding member and on the board of directors of the AIA Shanghai Chapter.

He is a Registered Architect in the State of California, and a LEED Accredited Professional as recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Moderator: Kathy Zhu Schleiss is the 7th President of AIA Shanghai. She was the founding partner as the Representative of Hellmuth Obata Kassabaum, is the Board members of AIASH WOFE since 2014. Kathy is also serving as AIA Shanghai’s Chapter Representative to AIA international in 2022.

Kathy had served the chapter as the Chair of Outreach Committee in 2015/2016, and Chair of Woman in Architecture in 2019.

Kathy has more than 20 years professional practice in Asia Pacific region. She is currently the Managing Director of German architecture firm, under her leadership, the team won the SusTec in Shenzhen, and Foshan German Center in the recent years. Her previous assignments were China Operations Director of WATG & Wimberly Interior, China Director of Hellmuth Obata Kassabaum, Executive Director of AECOM FDA Strategy. Kathy had served Australian Government for 7 years at the beginning of her professional career.
