Description:

Mr. Stephen Tanno, Director of Pre-Construction Services of Schüco International will talk about the theme of “Health, Welfare & Safety” encompassing sustainable, low-carbon, low-energy design and passive environmental control.  He will define the principles of human-oriented comfort and highlight measures to enhance health and promote wellness.  He will explain about products and options to reduce surface contamination to help deliver healthy buildings.

The presentation will include a case-study example of an educational building in London completed in 2020 which achieved a “BREEAM Excellent” certification.  The building is an outstanding example of low energy design and collaborative working.

Speaker bio:

Stephen graduated from The University of Southampton in 1987 and worked as a Consulting Engineer for the next 16 years, including 5 years with Ove Arup in Sydney and 8 years as Group Director with Buro Happold, where he founded the Facade Engineering Group, in London.  After 12 years working with premium European façade contractors, Stephen joined Schueco International in 2015 as Director of Pre-Constructions Services.

Stephen has worked on projects all round the world, is a chartered engineer and has a consistent track record of leading and delivering complex and bespoke high quality projects. He is a lateral thinker and has an all-round appreciation for design, engineering and build-ability. Stephen has extensive knowledge of project delivery from initial planning and design stages right through construction and handover.

In recent years Stephen has collaborated with numerous architects to develop sustainable and functional façade designs that went on to be implemented to a realistic budget through a reliable delivery mechanism by close collaboration with façade contractors.

The WIA lectures showcase the divergent practice of Two cities, Two women architects. This session features Shirley Ting (Taipei) and Christine Lam (Hong Kong).

The 21st century has brought sharp changes to the urban landscape. The eradication of definite boundaries in the social, economic and environmental composition created tremendous pressures for the local life and habitat. Asian cities, particularly, have found the abrupt changes altering local landscape and lifestyle. Cities filled with desires to modernize undertook actions that strained the local culture, perception, and ways of life. Urbanization ultimately mutated the local veins and people. Changes left irrevocable marks in the built environment; 2021 Taiwan-Taipei talk will showcase either a case study or a theme within the project development and design pertinent to the theme of interface of practice and context.

Irina Aristarkhova - Architectures of Hospitality

Irina Aristarkhova will present a vision of a welcoming space as a liminal and omnipresent threshold in spaces/senses/interests that enables to repair the rupture between the public and the private, the political and the personal despite cynicisms and oppressions that surround us. Through case studies of “The Living Room” Project created by Lee Mingwei in collaboration with Renzo Piano and situated in the new wing of Gardner Museum in Boston, and Moscow-based projects by Buromoscow, Aristarkhova will argue that spaces of welcome are not set in stone, they rather serve as ripples on water or in the sand of a Zen garden, enacting and (un)folding a being open to heterogeneity. Insisting on bringing architecture back into the interiority of subjective experience as a political gesture, Aristarkhova will show how architectures of hospitality create new effective politics in the middle of fortress-cities and the ruins of empires.

Speaker Bio

Irina Aristarkhova was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1969. She is Professor at the Stamps School of Art & Design and the Digital Studies Institute (College of Literature, Science and the Arts), where she serves as the Director of Graduate Studies, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She has published widely on the intersection of gender, technology and culture. In her monographs Hospitality of the Matrix: Philosophy, Biomedicine and Culture (Columbia University Press, 2012, Russian translation, 2017) and Arrested Welcome: Hospitality in Contemporary Art (University of Minnesota Press, 2020, online edition at https://manifold.umn.edu/projects/arrested-welcome), Aristarkhova has developed novel feminist approaches to theories and practices of hospitality. Prior to her move to the United States in 2006, she founded and directed the Cyberarts Research Initiative at the National University of Singapore.

CUHK School of Architecture is presenting the Kinoshita Lecture series with Eric Parry on March 25, 2021.

From skylines to materials the kit-of-parts globalization of cities dulls the spirit of creativity and social intercourse that represent a vibrant society. Likewise, the character of public space is determined through the uses of the buildings that define it and therefore good civic planning should begin by considering the narrative and proximity of these uses. Eric Parry will illustrate through precedents and projects designs in formal and informal juxtapositions to create the ground for more communicative civic space.

Speaker’s Bio

Eric Parry has developed a strong reputation for delivering beautifully crafted and high-quality contemporary buildings that respond to their context. Eric’s approach is particularly sensitive to dense urban contexts, such as the City of London’s, the use of materials – including innovative uses of ceramic – as well as the integration of art within his buildings, engaging with artists from the early stages of the design process.

Eric Parry’s contribution to Academia includes fourteen years as Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Cambridge and lectureships at the Harvard University Graduate Design School and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 2006 Eric Parry was elected Royal Academician (RA), one of the highest accolades for a practicing architect or artist in the UK and received an Honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Bath in 2012.
