AIA Hong Kong - First Projects Conversation Series: Lap Chi Kwong + Alison Von Glinow

AIA Hong Kong is excited to announce the resumption of First Projects, a series of conversations about “the construction of a practice” with talented young individuals who have initiated and maintained a career in architecture and design.
Architects from Hong Kong, the US and the Asia-Pacific region will reflect upon how their firm started – be it a first house, a lost competition, an unsolicited proposal, or a work on paper – and how that became the catalyst for the architectural adventures they are in now.
We will continue this series with Lap Chi Kwong and Alison Von Glinow, AIA, co-founders of Kwong Von Glinow, a Chicago-based office named “Next Progressive” by Architect Magazine.

Speakers’ Profiles
Lap Chi Kwong
Lap Chi earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and his Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He spent his early life in Hong Kong before moving to Seattle for his undergraduate education. Before co-founding Kwong Von Glinow, Lap Chi worked with the Pritzker Prize-winning offices of Herzog & de Meuron and Amateur Architecture Studio on cultural projects, single-family houses, and multi-family residential buildings, including the M+ Museum in Hong Kong, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Kramlich Residence & Gallery in California. He is an adjunct professor of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
Alison Von Glinow, AIA
Alison earned her undergraduate degree from Barnard College and her Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Before co-founding Kwong Von Glinow, Alison worked with internationally acclaimed practices including Herzog & de Meuron, SOM Chicago and New York, Toshiko Mori, and Svendborg Architects in Copenhagen. A Chicago native, Alison is a Board Member of the Chicago Architectural Club and is the current Chair of the Burnham Prize Competition. She is a licensed architect in Illinois and New York and a member of New York’s Urban Design Forum.
Kwong Von Glinow
Kwong Von Glinow is an award-winning architecture practice based in Chicago founded in 2017 by Lap Chi Kwong and Alison Von Glinow on the belief that architecture is meant to be enjoyed. The practice builds the thoroughly enjoyable from the slightly familiar and translates forward-looking architectural concepts into playful designs with broad appeal. Taking an optimistic and explorative approach, KVG focuses on creating innovative living environments, places for cultural engagement, urban public space, and contemporary workspaces. Kwong and Von Glinow are recipients of the 2018 Architectural League Prize of New York for Young Architects, have received a Graham Foundation Grant for their project Smuggling Architecture exhibited at the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel, Switzerland, and have been selected for the inaugural commission for the Designing a Better Chicago Pavilion along the Chicago Riverwalk for their project Give me a minute, please!
Enjoy Architecture
When we first put the two words “Enjoy” and “Architecture” together, it sounded quite odd in a good way. “Architecture” tends to sound serious and critical, while “enjoy” is a little too lighthearted for the context of architecture. We like that tension. The phrase “Enjoy Architecture” has emerged as an attitude as well as an approach and mission in our office. We strive to enjoy the process of building architecture and creating spaces for people to enjoy.
