Speaker

Una Ferreira, Una Stuurmann Architects

Description

"Architecture Built on Solid Rock 3x3 Fold" is grounded in a people-centered design philosophy, aiming to craft spaces that prioritize the needs, experiences, and well-being of their occupants. Core principles encompass: 1) User engagement, 2) Accessibility, 3) Comfort and well-being, 4) Social interaction, 5) Sustainability, and 6) Flexibility. This methodology embodies Psychosocial Architecture, which focuses on the interplay of psychological and social factors—an approach that has gained particular importance following the collective trauma of COVID-19.

The goal is to create functional, inviting and inclusive environments that foster positive experiences. Architects understanding “human tapestry”, which is the diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences and needs of people and are factors that significantly influences design in several ways, they are:

1. Cultural sensitive design, which reflects and honors local traditions and structures that resonate with community identity.

2. User-centric spaces that recognizes diverse user needs, leads to adaptable spaces and fosters inclusivity and social interaction.

3.Buildings that enhance comfort and connection can improve mental health and at the same time is environmentally responsive and resilient by reflecting local priorities.

We as “Architects” are born of this world, nurtured and supported by this world, educated by this world. Architecture theories are intertwined in our schools of architecture, let’s revisit Phenomenology in Architecture, which is the experience of space, sensory engagement, place and memory, intimacy and connection, temporal experiences and contextual awareness. Let’s explore Tectonics in Architecture which refers to the study of the structural and material aspects of buildings, focusing on how different elements come together to create form and space. Details matter and combined with art and sculpture enhances designs.

Machines have been integral to our society for a long time, with computers enhancing our lives and AI evolving rapidly. Yet, AI lacks the capacity for feelings, while we, as humans, have empathy—a quality essential in designing spaces, especially public buildings. It’s this ability to care that distinguishes us from AI. When we combine our human essence with technology, that’s when we create something truly magical.

Just as buildings aren’t built from a single brick, humans aren’t solitary; we don’t exist or thrive in isolation. Our communities shape us, and it’s only through unity that we can make a meaningful IMPACT. Poverty, unemployment, and housing shortages are widespread, and only by working together can we create a better world for all.

Speaker Bio

Una Ferreira completed her Bachelor of Architecture in 2005 at the University of the Free State. She drawsdeep inspiration from her upbringing in Katutura, a township in Windhoek, Namibia, which ignited her passion for community service and human-centred design. Through her firm

Una Stuurmann Architects and Social Enterprise Bold Creations, she embodies a profound architectural philosophy - anchored in the human vector in architecture - where each project is a heartfelt response to the people who will inhabit and experience spaces.

Her work is steeped in empathy and storyteIIing, as she strives to create emotionally resonant buildings that do more than just serve functional purposes; they care for the emotional and psychological well-being of the occupants. This approach, which she calls empathy layering architecture, involves a deep discernment of the social and physical needs of the community. Through this lens, she ensures that her designs are not just visually appealing, but also rich in physio- sociological architecture - spaces that address both the physiological and sociological dimensions of human life.

Her work extends beyond architecture into the realm of sustainable, community-driven creations. Bold Creations show cases Namibian talent through recycled and handcrafted furniture, art, and sculpture, emphasising her belief that architecture and design are powerful tools to foster both community pride and environmental stewardship. With every project, Una embodies innovation, care, and a commitment to the sustainable growth of her community, proving that architecture can be a force for social change.

It suggests that building is a collaborative process that develops architecture suited to its environment. The lecture will go through the following themes:

  • Whole of Life: Architecture is interwoven with the act of living, emerging through collaboration and shaped by context.

  • Spatial Totality: Architecture creates an internal world while also being part of the larger external environment. It links these realms, forming a continuum that connects various spatial scales.

  • Temporal Totality: Architecture exists across time, influenced by the past and the future. Each material carries historical significance, encouraging us to create spaces that resonate with all temporal dimensions.

  • Irreplaceability of Existence: Viewing architecture as a living entity fosters a deeper appreciation that transcends function and performance, embracing imperfections and nurturing the relationship between architecture and nature.

Description

Join us for a virtual tour of Saltmarsh House by Niall McLaughlin Architects, a house overlooking a tidal salt marsh in the north east of the Isle of Wight.

Conceived as a delicate steel frame that floats above a meadow of wild grasses, the pavilion houses a long dining hall framed by three smaller spaces: a kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom.

The building is organised around a repeating 5m x 5m grid of slender quadripartite columns that frame views and support a lightweight trussed roof structure. This large overhanging roof canopy unites the four volumes and forms a perimeter verandah. The glass wall passes through the centre of each column, revealing the building skeleton to both the inside and the outside.

The metal frame is painted in a rich golden and the roof is lined with copper. Together with the weathered silver deck, these materials reflect the warm hues and cool tones of the surrounding pasture and marshland.

Speakers

Alan Lai, Allied Environmental Consultants
Jason Ouyang, JJP Architects and Planners
Jiexin Li, Architecture 2030

Description

Climate change presents a formidable challenge and, as architects, we have a unique opportunity to address this pressing issue. Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions associated with construction of our built environment is essential - but a critical question remains: how can this be achieved? This session will explore various aspects of what can be done, citing knowledge transfer, development of skills, tools and working frameworks, and the ethos of firms that are advancing more effective climate action every day.

Alan Lai, from Allied Environmental Consultants, Hong Kong, will discuss the importance of airflow and natural ventilation in sustainable environments. This will include case studies on the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in urban contexts, with a focus on microclimate studies and air ventilation assessments - especially in relation to wind-influenced design.

From Taipei, Jason Ouyang of JJP Architects and Planners, will explain how his firm is currently designing projects based on environmental considerations and how they delineate sustainability standards in Taiwan. This will address the identification of suitable solutions, and illustrate a framework that allows an architectural firm to go beyond mere regulatory compliance through cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Finally, Jiexin Li from Architecture 2030, Shanghai, will speak on the systemic transformation within our industry, particularly in Greater China and Asia, guiding us towards the shared objective of achieving net zero carbon emissions in the building sector.
