In just two months, AIA Latin America has already launched two official collaboration initiatives, supporting the Pan-American Architecture Bienniale of Quito BAQ2024 and the AIA COD Architecture Study Tour of Brazil.
We're also planning a regional mini-conference in Quito this August, where representatives from various countries will gather to discuss the growth and relationships of our institution with other architectural organizations.
Looking ahead to 2025, we are organizing another conference in Mexico. The tremendous success of the AIA International Mexico City conference in 2023 has sparked demand for similar events. The International Design Fair, which will take place this September in Medellin, Colombia, has asked AIA Latin America to be part of it, inviting two speakers. At AIA24 in Washington, Gustavo Ribeiro and Jose Luis Salinas represented AIA Latin America at its first national AIA conference, fostering connections with many AIA chapters and individuals interested in engaging with AIA Latin America.
Pan-American Architecture Biennial of Quito BAQ2024
Quito will host the most important architectural event in the Americas from November 18 to 22, 2024. The Pan-American Architecture Biennial of Quito BAQ2024 will bring together over 2,500 participants daily, including prominent professionals and academics from around the world, to discuss and exchange knowledge on contemporary architecture.
This edition, under the theme “CONVERGENCES: Architecture Landscape” will focus on debating the potential of architecture in the construction of the urban landscape. For one week, BAQ2024 promises to be a meeting point for experts in architecture and urbanism, students, and professionals. Through discussions, keynote lectures, round tables, and interviews, it will provide a space for participation and debate that will enrich contemporary practice in our profession.
AIA COD Architecture Study Tour of Brazil
Connecting Cultures, Catalyzing Change
São Paulo, Brasilia, and Rio de Janiero October 17-26 2024
This will be the first COD International Conference on Design since 2019. Attendees will visit three major Brazilian cities: São Paulo, Brasília, and Rio de Janeiro, commemorating the 200th Anniversary of bilateral relations between the US and Brazil.
During this 10-day study tour, participants will have the opportunity to engage in cultural exchange and explore how different regions develop unique, place-based forms of design thinking influenced by their culture and empathy for society. The event will also draw comparisons between Brazil’s approach to design and the experiences at COD’s spring design conference in Northwest Arkansas. Both regions demonstrate varying degrees of private and public sector investment in design that benefits society and shapes architecture and development worldwide.
