Greetings from Japan with Sakura! As we celebrate the arrival of spring, the Sakura - cherry blossoms - are in full bloom, symbolizing the essence of Japan's spirit. In April, Japan welcomes the start of the new fiscal and school year. At AIA Japan, we inaugurated the year 2024 in January with our new President, Yumiko Yamada. Continuing a cherished tradition, President Yamada hosted a “Past Presidents Lunch or Dinner”, where eleven esteemed past presidents, spanning from 2006 to 2023, offered valuable insight and advice to guide her tenure.
For our members, we have organized enriching experiences, including visits to architecture galleries and beer nights. One highlight was the guided tour to the exhibition Urban Fungus – Architecture is a Complex Mesh, showcasing the work of emerging Japanese architects Fuminori Nousaku and Mio Tsuneyama, recipients of the 15th Venice Architectural Biennale Special Mention Award. This tour, part of our ongoing series, took us to TOTO-MA Gallery, a gallery specializing in architecture and design that is operated by TOTO, a leading sanitary ware manufacturer in Japan.
Our networking events, such as Ebisu Beer Nite vol.2 & 3 (now known as ABC: Architecture, Beer, Chat), provide a relaxed environment for members and prospective members to connect and exchange ideas.
In February, our lecture series started with a compelling talk by Michael Eliason on Low carbon living with climate adaptive eco districts & buildings. Additionally, our secretary for 2024, Tom Bader, represented us at the Leadership Summit in Washington DC, while James Scott Brew, a prominent speaker specializing in environmental issues, shared insights on Global Leadership in Materials at the AIA International Spring Conference 2024.

We extend a warm invitation to all AIA members to join us in our events and activities!
