AIA Middle East Co-Founder, Past President and Executive Director Sherif Anis, FAIA elevated to the College of Fellows
The fellowship program was developed to elevate those architects who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession and made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national and international level.
Sherif is a founding member of the AIA Middle East Board of Directors, he has served as the Chapter's Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President and was the 2013 and 2016 President and is the chapter’s Executive Director. Sherif has also served on the AIA International Region Board of Directors as the founding Zone 1 Region Director, the 2017-2018 Secretary and the current Middle East Chapter Representative.
Mr. Anis received a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University School of Architecture.

AIA Middle East recently hosted an online lecture on February 15 by Mahmood Al Wahaibi and Shehla Hussain on Ethnography for Urban Development.
This addressed the question - as urban developments happen around us, how can we acknowledge and integrate Society and Culture into the design process? Oman Think Urban is launching its official service to understand, learn from, and engage with local communities in developing their Spatial Futures, making Ethnography a mainstream urban design practice. This was an opportunity to learn about what Ethnography is and why it matters more than ever to urban planning and design today.
Mahmood Al Wahaibi is an Urban Planner and holds professional certifications including LEED GA, IBDL International Certified Trainer and APA Certification; Shehla Hussain is an Architect, Urban Planning Professional and Design Researcher, with an M. Arch from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

AIA Middle East hosted an online lecture on February 8 by Arif Mehmood about Architecture + Engineering Collaboration over the Past 40 Years.
In the world of multidisciplinary design consultancies, this talk touched on how architecture is a collaborative process: reaching out to other disciplines to develop exemplar solutions. The talk discussed the development of key engineering disciplines and their collaboration with architecture over the past 40 years, by harnessing change, keeping ahead with changes across technology, social and financial structures.
Arif Mehmood, Director of Architecture at SSH, holds a Bachelor’s Degree and a postgraduate Diploma in Architecture from Demontfort University (UK), as well as a Master’s Degree from the University College of London (Bartlett, UK). He is also a registered Architect with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) of the UK, and a Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

In this talk, signs of a well-planned process for building Qatar’s new identity and urban brand were interrogated.
Ali A. Alraouf is Prof. of Architecture and Urbanism at HBK University snf Head of Research and Development at the Urban Planning Dept. Doha, Qatar. He is an architect and urban designer with 35 years of academic, research and consultancy experience around the Middle East, and the world. He is interested in research and practice related to architectural, urban and sustainable people-based design and architecture.
