AIA Taipei - Visible & Invisible: Transforming Through Culture & Nature

New Taipei City Art Museum. Image credit: © Iwan Baan

Event Description

Architecture embodies both the visible and the invisible.

Its physical presence “materials, forms, and structure” is tangible and evident. Yet, its deeper essence is intangible, shaped by spatial experiences, cultural narratives, and the natural and historical context of a place.

The challenge lies in harmonizing these two dimensions, transforming them to resonate with contemporary lives and minds. This delicate balance is what makes architecture not just a discipline, but a profound and ever-evolving dialogue between past and future, nature and culture, the seen and the unseen.

AIA Southeast Asia - Adaptive Architecture - Lessons From The Past And Innovation To Adapt To Modern Construction

Event Description

The transformation of construction technology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries has created conditions for expanding concretization and urban construction more rapidly and widely than ever before. We imagine the earth as a spherical body with a protective layer of fur and skin; construction works springing up like countless needles piercing that skin; green areas and rivers are taken away like peeled skin, and the body of the earth is no longer intact but becomes highly vulnerable, the natural environment is no longer intact. The development process always goes hand in hand with the construction process, which is inevitable. However, we always think about what impact is the least and which construction process has the least impact on nature above and below the ground. Cutting down trees and digging the ground affects the vegetation above and the groundwater and the soil layers below; concreting will also make the ground no longer retain its natural permeability, causing flooding everywhere. Architecture needs a new Transformation, a new way of designing, building, and living. Since ancient times, when information technology was not yet developed, indigenous architecture was inherited through each period and improved through each generation. When observing these works, we must admit that the transformation of indigenous architecture over time suits the needs of living and the tropical climate of the locality. Adaptive architecture is both the inheritance of indigenous architecture's good points and strengths and the promotion and innovation to suit today's needs better.

AIA International - Volumetric Steel Modular Construction Systems for Sustainability and Resilience

Event Description

This system is now becoming a world wide recognized method of design and construction. Starting as a hotel design solution it has become viable for student, assisted living, labor, worker, affordable housing. It is a complete system including structure, MEP, finishes, FF&E. Reference factory built products with third party inspection adding to a quality system that is easy to install and is structurally stable accepting wind loads and earth quake requirements including multiple floors in excess of 20 levels. It reduces travel on and off construction sites by 70-80%, reduces waste off site 70%, and produces a high quality finished building as designed by the architect and his consultants.
