This year, AIA Hong Kong initiated the First Projects conversation series when we invited architects from around the world to share their experience with our members and emerging architects in the region by reflecting upon how their firm started – be it a first house, a lost competition, an unsolicited proposal, or a work on paper – and how that became the catalyst for the architectural adventures they are in now.
We are excited to conclude this series with a lunchtime seminar featuring Los Angeles-based architect Michael Maltzan, FAIA, design principal of Michael Maltzan Architecture and recipient of the 2016 AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal, American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award.
Speaker Bio
Michael Maltzan, FAIA
Michael Maltzan founded Michael Maltzan Architecture in 1995. His work encompasses a wide range of typologies, from cultural institutions to urban planning and design. Notable projects include the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University, MoMA QNS, Star Apartments, the Pittman Dowell Residence, the new Sixth Street Viaduct, MIT Vassar Street Residential Hall, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery Inuit Art Centre.
Michael received BFA and B.Arch degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and his M.Arch from the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University.
In addition to becoming a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and receiving the 2016 AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal, he is a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award and was elected to the National Academy of Design in 2020. He currently serves on the Dean’s Leadership Council at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Visiting Committee to the GSD. He was featured in the Canadian Centre for Architecture’s 2019 film, What It Takes to Make a Home, delivered at the 20th Annual John T. Dunlop Lecture for the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard, and his Star Apartments project was named One of the 25 Best Inventions of 2015 by Time Magaz.
