Artist and Designer
Sonali Dharmawardena has worked with different creative mediums from a very young age during her time at the Cora Abraham’s art school. Both an artist and a designer, Sonali has taken one of the oldest Sri Lankan artisan crafts and put her own individual stamp on it.
Sonali’s line of couture is best described as wearable art. Experimenting with new technologies such as foiling on fabric combined with the wax resisted art of Batik, to create one of a kind pieces of art and value additions to the natural base fabric.
Her work has been recognised on numerous platforms; from fashion shows to international panels/ consortiums - in the UK, US, Middle East, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Vienna, Spain, Kuwait and France. Sonali launched her brand at CFW 2011 and has been a regular feature and one of their senior designers for the past 8 years. She is also a member of British Alpaca Fashions.
Sonali’s work was worn by the Miss England semi finalists in 2015. She was also part of the Lankan and Indian design confluence organised by PR Sri Lanka, held in Mumbai in 2017. Her art has been commissioned and hangs at the Kolamba restaurant in London. As well as decorating boutique hotel Kumu Beach in Sri Lanka, and the Galle fort holiday villa of Kumar Sangakkara which was featured in Vogue Living. Her work can also be seen at Anantara Tangalle, Wild Coast tented lodge in Yala and is very prominently featured on the 247 panel ceiling of Cinnamon Bentota. Vogue India hailed Sonali as one of the Top Sri Lankan Designers to look out for.
