AIA Canada/ UIA: Indigenous Peoples Work Programme 2022-2026

Event Description

The Indigenous Peoples Work Programme (IPWP) was constituted in 2022. The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) serve as the Secretariat to the IPWP. Dr. Patrick Stewart (Nisga’a), Elisapeta Heta (Māori) and Whare Temu (Māori) serve as the inaugural Co-Directors of the Work Programme.

As one of the newest Work Programme’s in the UIA, it gives a platform to often marginalized, overlooked and underfunded Indigenous issues in the built environment. Indigenous architects and their allies from around the world have exhibited and presented their work at the UIA Congress in Copenhagen in 2023, the UIA Forum in Kuala Lumpur in 2024 and currently working on an exhibit and presentations for the RAIC Conference in Montreal 2025 and the UIA Congress in Barcelona in 2026. Based upon a consensus governance model, the IPWP showcases the work of its over volunteer thirty members representing fifteen member countries through webinars, lectures, publications and in-person presentations.  We look forward to seeing you in Montreal and Barcelona. Stop by our booth and listen to a presentation or just say “hi”.

In this conference session, Dr. Stewart will give an overview of the work being carried out by its members, its mission and the challenges it faces.
