AIA Hong Kong - Quantitative Details: The Application of Data and Simulations in the Design Process

AIA Hong Kong - Quantitative Details: The Application of Data and Simulations in the Design Process

Event Description

To combat the urgency of climate change, architects will need to design buildings from a whole life carbon perspective. The need to quantify building performance from the early design stage has emerged as a critical step for reducing both operational and embodied carbon. It's no longer a luxury for project team to put off sustainability analysis till later stage.

The presentation will explore how designers can utilize data and simulations to drive high performance design as early as concept stage. The analysis will explore the what, why, and how of analysis, the details embedded in the assumptions. Examples will cover contextual response to solar, wind, and shading conditions. And at more detailed level, how designers can approach façade performance and carbon quantification to optimize operational and embodied carbon from a whole life carbon perspective.

Speaker

Vikki Lew, AIA Upjohn Fellow, Committee of the Environment Chair, AIA Hong Kong; Project Architect & Sustainability Lead, SOM

Moderator: Cynthia Ting, AIA, Committee of the Environment Co-Chair, AIA Hong Kong; Project Architect & Studio Sustainability Lead, NBBJ (HK)

Vikki Lew is a California-licensed architect with fifteen years experience. Her diverse portfolio ranges from tall building, aviation, to healthcare projects. Vikki served as chapter Secretary and Young Architects group founding chair at AIA Hong Kong in 2015-17. She is currently the COTE chair at AIA Hong Kong and Award committee advisor at AIA Shanghai. At national level, she was the recipient of AIA Upjohn Fellowship and College of Fellows emerging professional grant. She was also the first international editor at YAF Connection Journal (2017-18).

Vikki founded Design Research in 2019 to undertake the applied research under the Upjohn Fellowship. The independent research addresses the challenges of data and building performance as architects strive to design for decarbonization at time of climate emergency.

Vikki began her career at The Design Partnership in San Francisco, and has worked at Foster+Partners, SOM and Atkins in Hong Kong. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Oregon and a Master of Liberal Arts in Sustainability from Harvard.

Moderator: Cynthia Ting is currently working with NBBJ in Hong Kong studio designing technology campus, life science buildings, and office buildings. She is the studio advocate for sustainability as well as the co-chair for the Committee of the Environment of AIA. She is pushing for social engagements within and beyond architects with the adoption of new green technological applications that enables architects and other key industry players to make informed decisions that do good to the environment.

Cynthia is an architect interested in solving spatial and environmental problems through the lens of social science and passion of new technology.  She began her career as a journalist before studying architecture. Her experience as a journalist leads her to believe architecture need to imagine people’s need in the future with adoption of emerging technology.

Cynthia is a registered architect in the Massachusetts State, a NCARB certificate holder and a LEED Accredited Professional. She holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Architecture) The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Master of Architecture from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
