AIA Canada Update

Greetings from AIA Canada!

In response to COVID-19, the AIA Canada Board of Directors is in the process of updating the organizational strategic plan, and reviewing priorities for the next 12 to 18 months.

At the end of April, the Chapter contacted RAIC for a first-step planning meeting to discuss opportunities for the RAIC conference, June 6-9, 2021 in Montreal.

AIA Japan

AIA Japan plans to host ten online lectures in 2020. One of those was held on June 11, where Byron Stigge of LEVEL Infrastructure introduced a wide range of engineering and infrastructure projects from across the globe, which included New York, Burundi, Philippines, and Afghanistan. His projects address challenges of developing urban infrastructure in an integrated manner, where transportation, energy, water, and waste are all designed in consideration of each other. This approach leads to creation of cities with optimized ecological systems, rather than over-engineered systems designed within the frame of single-disciplines.

President's Letter - August 2020

It continues to be a challenging time for many of us, both professionally and personally. Here at the International Region, the board and I are trying to turn adversity into opportunity. Some of our progress to date:

Working with our seven chapters, we have begun sharing online content with the entire IR community. Since March there have been more than 30 events online, all offering continuing education credits. Some of these have been exceptional talks. There are even some virtual building tours which are amazing! To see upcoming events look here. We are in the process of making the recordings of past events available, and these should be online in the next 2-3 weeks.

President's Letter

Covid-19 has had a massive impact on all of us. Our first concern is, of course, for those whose health is directly affected. Beyond that, the effect on the architectural profession is enormous, and the full consequences are yet to be known. The stresses that many of us are experiencing, both professionally and personally, are challenging indeed.

For the AIA International Region, there are also challenges. However, embedded within

AIA Middle East

AIA Middle East

AIA Middle East got off to a good start and held two events in 2020. In early March, just as planning got underway for the 8th annual Year End Conference (YEC) and Design Awards to be held in Dubai this November as a joint conference and Awards program with the International Region, it became clear that the chapter’s third event, “Waltzing with Chaos” planned in Beirut Lebanon was going to need to be postponed. As many if not all of the countries represented by the Chapter went into partial or complete lockdowns due to the COVID-19 virus, it became clear that the AIAME-IR Conference would need to be postponed to 2021.

AIA Shanghai

AIA Shanghai

AIA Shanghai began 2020 with the theme 2020 Vision: A Focused Look Ahead with the plan to focus events on discussing the future of design and how cutting edge designers our working to improve our cities and how we live. Of course, that vision has had to change suddenly to adapt to the new constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the hardships imposed on our community.
